Export pricing calculator for Japan

· FX 2026-08-31 · Japan Customs

A cosmetics & skincare product costing ₩18,000 to make and weighing 0.3kg lands in Japan at about $27.14 once freight, duty and Consumption tax are paid. To keep a 45% margin after marketplace fees, price it at ¥13,000.

Knowing your landed cost does not give you a price. This works from what the product costs to make and what it weighs, through duty, Consumption tax and freight, to a number you can actually put on the page in JPY — rounded the way Japan prices things.

What actually differs about selling into Japan

  • Rakuten and Amazon Japan dominate. Rakuten charges roughly 2–7% plus a monthly fee and expects heavy point-campaign participation; Amazon Japan is 8–15%.
  • Packaging is judged. A crushed outer box is a common reason for a return here even when the product is fine.
  • Consumption tax is displayed inclusive by law, so the price a shopper sees already contains the 10% — price accordingly.

Questions people ask

How do I price a product for Japan?

Start from what it costs you to make and what it weighs. Add freight for that weight, duty at your HS rate, and Consumption tax where it applies — that is your landed cost. Divide by one minus your target margin and fees, convert to JPY, then round to what Japan shoppers expect to see. This calculator does all of it.

Does weight really change the retail price?

On small parcels it dominates. On this page a 0.1kg unit and a 2kg unit differ by ¥6,300 at the same margin, because freight is charged per kilo and small shipments carry a fixed base fee. Bulky-but-light products are charged on volumetric weight instead.

Is there a duty-free threshold for Japan?

The threshold is ¥10,000. Customs value at or below JPY 10,000 is generally exempt from duty and consumption tax.

It is rounded to the convention of the market. Japan prices land on 100 ¥, so the calculator rounds up to the nearest one rather than showing a raw figure nobody would put on a page.
